Leadership Menomonie

Leadership Menomonie Class 2007-08

What is Leadership Menomonie?

Leadership Menomonie (LM) is a program designed to develop community leaders who have the skills to work together, are stimulated to be part of solutions, and accept ownership of community issues.

Leadership Menomonie is not a traditional leadership program. LM is a combination of community education and skill building, both personal and professional. This specially designed program, which lasts for nine months, gives participants an “up close and personal look” at their community in a way that most people never experience.

How does LM work?

Participants are required to attend a two-day opening overnight retreat, eight one-day sessions and a graduation event over a nine month period.

Sessions

The eight one-days sessions are typically held on the third Thursday of each month from September through May from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In December, in addition to the morning session designed around personal development, the group hosts a holiday luncheon for LM Alumni and day chairs. At each session, Leadership Menomonie alumni and other local leaders provide information on various topics:

  • Education
  • Agriculture and the Environment
  • Business & Industry
  • Health & Human Services
  • Government & Law
  • Arts, Culture & Tourism
  • Media

All sessions offer a hands-on experience through field trips, hands on activities and opportunities to interact with community leaders related to the topic day.

Retreat

The program begins with an overnight retreat at The Creamery Restaurant and Inn where participants participate in a variety of networking and team-building activities. A major part of the opening retreat is centered on activities at the Eagles View Ropes Course at UW-Eau Claire. At the retreat, participants also choose a community service project that is required to be completed before graduation. Project presentations are made at the graduation event held in May.

What do Participants Gain from Leadership Menomonie?

Participants of Leadership Menomonie will experience unique learning opportunities, improve their decision making and leadership skills, and build their confidence, all while gaining a greater understanding of their community. Participants will also meet and learn with a whole new network of local professionals. Some participants have called their experience “a life altering event,” “the most rewarding experience in my professional life so far,” “LM will become our city’s best defense against community apathy.” To read other testimonials from LM, click here.

What Will Employers Gain?

Employers electing to send their employees to Leadership Menomonie benefit in many ways as employees:

  • become more skilled in the interpersonal requirements of their jobs such as problem solving, team building and developing networking skills
  • get a first hand look at how their community works—community awareness is also important as a lot of effort is put forth by employers to retain a skilled workforce; by helping to get their employees involved in the community is another way to help retain our workforce
  • develop new professional networking opportunities
  • improve their vision for “big picture” thinking
  • gain additional exposure for their companies
